Affiliate Marketing Blogs Get a Redesign

September 3rd, 2010 by Zac Johnson

There’s nothing like a new custom wordpress theme to shake things up and get you motivated! I’m crazy about having a custom theme for my established blogs, it’s the best way to show you mean business and stand out from the crowd. With that said, I noticed two of my favorite affiliate marketing blogs recently had their own blogs completed redesigned. Let’s take a look!

JonathanVolk.com

The new theme over at JonathanVolk.com has added a lot more features, content and color to the blog. Created by Unique Blog Design, you know the quality and color design is going to be top notch. Jon also did a great job with ad management, there are ad spots all over the site, but not too overwhelming. I really like the new magazine feel with the thumbnail posts on the mail page, and the addition of IntenseComments on the post pages. Good stuff!

MrGreen.am

Lorenzo’s (Mr. Green) first blog theme was pretty basic, but the content made the blog stand out. The new theme is just excellent! I love the use of colors.. the background and “coupon” look edges make the content just stand right out. Still focusing heavily on content, there is only one ad banner on the site; which is for EWA Network. The new blog design definitely backs out that MrGreen.am is still “The Best Internet Marketing Blog*”… (*to come out of New Zealand)

SixFigureAffiliateBlogging.com

A few months ago I released my first free ebook called “Six Figure Affiliate Blogging: How You Can Be the Next $100,000 Blogger“. At the time I thought it would be a good idea to launch the ebook off it’s own domain instead of through ZacJohnson.com. The major launch for the ebook has now ended, but the domain is still loaded up with juicy back links and great search engine listings. I always had the idea to eventually turn the domain/site into a full blog focusing on blogging and affiliate marketing, and I finally got the time last week to get started. The focus of this blog will be towards wordpress/blogging themes, advertising methods and how to make money with affiliate marketing and blogging. While it’s quite the task to write daily for two blogs at the moment, it’s always exciting to start a new blog. Shoot me an email if you have ideas for a post, or would like to guest post.

Take a look at these new blog designs and let me know what you think!

Facebook Incorporates Liked Web Content Into Search Results

September 3rd, 2010 by Search Engine Watch Blog

Like All Facebook, perhaps we should have suspected something was up, because yesterday a new type of update was displaying in the activity stream. Did you see it? I noticed that when i shared the stunning Arcade Fire HTML 5 video and hilarious UpCeption (An Up & Inception mashup video), as it got further shared beyond my network, a distinctly new social update displayed.

Rather than saying:
Friend X shared LINK with Friend Y

The new update says:
Friend X and Friend Y BOTH shared Link

It’s distinct because it highlights when both people share the same link. Whereas the first scenario tells the story of single interactions between friends, this new scenario tells the story of the interaction of single content plays among your network.

Sound familiar? It should be. If there was an activity stream for the Google Crawler calculating PageRank, arguably it would say something very similar. DomainX.com and DomainY.com both linked to SearchEngineWatch.com.

How is Facebook Displaying and Ranking Web Content?

These seem to be the factors that influence ranking so far. In descending order of importance.

  1. Who shared it first – ‘who’ being determined by the open graph algorithm which is prioritizing people in your network based on interactions (much like Gmail Priority Inbox)
  2. Relationship to others who also liked it – maybe an aggregate open graph score?
  3. Total number of likes of shared content

Also, crucially there are currently two types of search engine results pages (SERPs):

  • One is the drop down list of suggestions, that is a mix of Facebook content types (e.g. friends, likes, pages and groups)
  • facebook-searchresults.png

  • Extended search results page. Click ‘see more results’ and you will get a full page of results which prioritize a ‘posts by friends’ section. It is worth noting that new content discovery was possible at this stage – content i had not seen that had been shared within my network and included the keywords ‘search results’ was surfaced in the subsequent listings.
  • facebook-sharedfriends.png

  • Furthermore, in the ‘see more results’ section you can drill deeper to ‘posts by everyone’.
  • facebook-everyone.png

The trend seems to be that the 3 ranking factors above, replicate within the post by friends and post by everyone section. Keywords definitely play a role in determining ‘what’ the content is. Ranking is determined by directness of the relationship to you. Where there is no direct relationship, ‘likes’ becomes the strongest signal. The formula reads something like this:

(Keyword relevance of shared content within your immediate friend network) divided by (ranked in order of who shared it) x (total number of likes)

For example, the screenshot below prioritises my active friends over less active ones, and in turn ranks that segment based on total ‘likes’. Both are active in the sense that we interact on Facebook, but one is in more regular contact than the other.

facebook-howto.png

Also it is worth noting that it is not happening just on news content. It’s happenining on all web content. Furthermore, where the like button is not integrated on the destination page, in-activity stream likes are used to rank the web content. Vimeo does not have Facebook Like Buttons, but lots of people liked the link, so UpCeption, ranks for Inception in this instance, because it is most relevant to my network.

facebook-inception.png

However, arguably, that is the wrong way around. Searching for stuff I already had seen defeats the purpose of web search as a content discovery mechanism – which must ultimately be Facebook’s goal. Ironically, they may have to downplay proximity to achieve the lofty goals of rivalling Google.

So, the big question remains as to whether users will start searching Facebook posts as a way of discovering new content. Try some searches for ‘funny’, ‘brilliant’ or ‘hilarious’ within the ‘posts by friends’ or ‘posts by everyone’ section to find out for yourself whether this could be a useful feature.

Are You Thinking Like Google?

September 3rd, 2010 by Aaron Wall

No, not like that, but in the good way! :D

The following is a guest post by Jim Kukral highlighting one of the most fundamental tips to succeeding online.

Have you ever really taken a step back from all the technical SEO stuff and thought about why Google wins? The real reasons why they have mass-market share and why they continue to dominate? It’s time you should, because once you understand how to start thinking like Google, you can finally begin to go beyond just ranking better, but also how to be a master Internet marketer so you can get more sales, leads and publicity.

After all, once you’ve been found, you now have to convert. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time.

So why does Google win? Because Google is the world’s biggest, and best, problem solver. The truth is that there are only two reasons why we all go online, using Google or not. Those two reasons are:

1. To have a problem solved
2. To be entertained

That’s it. Everything, and I mean everything you do online falls under one of those categories. For example, let’s say you’re planning on cooking your wife her favorite chicken marsala dish for your anniversary. You go online and do a search for “chicken marsala recipes”. Boom, you now have recipes, and videos, and images and cookbooks and all kinds of information to help you solve your problem.

As another example, let’s say you wanted to relax after work and watch your favorite musician play some of your favorite songs. You go to YouTube and do a search for “Rolling Stones Videos” and boom, you’re now watching video content that entertains you.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, is already the number two most searched search engine on the Internet (behind Google of course). That means that today billions of people are actively searching the Internet for video content. That also means that because of the public’s fast-growing massive hunger for content in video form, that regular people and businesses alike are now able to profit from the creation of that said video content.

The truth is, Google (and your business) has to solve problems for their (your) customers, the Internet searcher. If they (you) can’t do that, they (you) lose customers. It’s that black and white.

So I’ll ask you again. Are you thinking like Google? Have you sat down and figured out what your target audience’s biggest problems are? If you haven’t done that you need to do it now. Anticipate what they need. Figure out their pain and then create products/services that take that pain away.

Just like Google.

  • Microsoft Cloaking MSNBots Again?

A WebmasterWorld thread has webmasters complaining that Microsoft is cloaking their MSNBots again, soon to be named BingBot. • Just Cause You Spend $65k On A Site Does Mean Google Should Like Your Affiliate Site

Yesterday I tweeted, “Just cause you spend 65k on a web site, doesn’t mean Google will like it” and referenced a Google Webmaster Help thread. Well, I was wrong! Well, not 100% wrong. People agreed with me, in fact, it garnered a lot of retweets and responses on Twitter. 99.99% were all into what I wrote. But I am not. If you spend $65,000 on a web site, the web site should rank well. I

Learning How To Choose Super Domain Names For SEO

September 3rd, 2010 by Stephen Grisham, Sr.

1. English must be the language you use for your domain name, even if your website is geared toward your local dialect or a small geographical area. Always remember that the name of a domain is accessible globally, or from everywhere in the world. It is easier for visitors to find your site on a search engine if it is in the English language and not your native language. Your website’s prevailing idea must be highlighted by the name. This means that your domain name has to be focused on a niche.

2. There must be no more than three words in it. I have noticed a lot of people making this mistake over and over. One example would be www.seoexplain.com. Obviously, this domain name is the combination of two words: SEO and EXPLAIN. As many as three words can be utilized, but using more than three is definitely not recommended.

2. It may not be constructed from more than three words. I have noticed this mistake being made by people over and over. For example, consider www.seoexplain.com. This domain name is composed of two words: SEO and EXPLAIN. While you can use as many as three words, using more than that is definitely not recommended.

4. No characters that are special, such as “-” should be in it. This is not as important for search engines, but most important for real visitors. Usually domains like seoexplain.com stay in your memory a lot easier than seo-explain.com.

Tips: If you are considering starting a website, my suggestion is not to wait, but come up with the name and purchase the domain name. You can develop the site, choose hosting service, etc. later. There is proof that older domains are good performers on SEO. It is a recommendation that the registration of your domain be at least more than two years. Domains with one year registrations are usually thought to be potential spam according to the main search engines. Domain life is a big deal when thinking about the SEO of your business on the Internet.
